Steering Team Meeting Minutes

Monday April 2, 2007

5:00-6:30 PM

Valley Media Center

 

In attendance: Dave Runyon, Linda Watson, Sharon Rich, Cathy Molumby, Sheryl Butikofer, Lorretta Lerch, Cassie Friederich, Malinda Riley and Michelle Rothlisberger

 

A. Financial Report:  Elgin State Bank, Period Ending 3/14/2007       ~ $9,238.23

            Evaluation Valley Mentoring Needs: Do we want to show Mentoring as a negative balance?

            Prevention through Mentoring Update: The Mentoring Grant will decrease 20% each year. Yr.1- $7,600 Yr. 2- $6,340 Yr. 3- $5,072 Yr. 4- $4,058 Yr. 5- $3,246

            Community Grant details: We were awarded the Community Grant which is $3,000.  The money is divided up between SODA, Mentoring and Parent/Community.  Michelle will be keep track of how the money is spent down. 

 

B. Reports from Sub-Groups

  - Cassie and Malinda will be attending the Governor’s Conference, April 9-11

            1. Youth

            -Neighborhood Watch Potluck as moved to Thursday April 19th.  Soda will be doing a short Fatal Vision Goggles presentation.

            -SODA students are working hard on impacting their peers and younger students who look up to them.

            -7 SODA members met to talk about concerns in the community… for the DFC grant.

            - 9 SODA members have signed Memorandum of Understanding forms.

            - SODA members are collaborating with Neighborhood Watch to begin a safe house project in the community.

            - Coral Ridge Mall field trip – 26 kids went along!!

            - Fun in the Park is coming up.  Locations will be Clermont and Wadena.  Looking for grants to cover this activity.

            - John’s Appliance in Postville gave us a brand new, slightly damaged (dent of top) fridge for $250. They also gave us a $50 donation with free delivery.  Randy Weidenhoff covered the remaining $100 as a donation!!!!

            - 8th grade Tobacco Conference- Monday May 7th.  Can take 5 students.

            - Internet Safety Presenter – possible collaboration in Sept./Oct. with Clermont Neighborhood Watch

           

            2. Parent/Community

                        - We will be doing “Substance Free” Graduation Party Signs.  Allen Knox Associates will be sponsoring a Pony Keg of Root Beer to those who participate.

                        - We are in the beginning stages of getting area businesses to consider going smoke-free.

                        - We are starting Safe Prom Activities

                        -VCC will be giving 2 coupon books for Post prom.  

           

            3. Mentoring

                        - Mentoring Subgroup Meeting Wednesday, April 25th at 5:00 pm.

                        - Currently 9 mentor/mentee matches, 3 mentors waiting.

                        - Adopt-A-Highway: Need to follow up.

 

C. DFC Grant Application

            - Linda showed the 5 year plan and gave an overall picture of the grant.   The grant will be mailed out Thursday April 12th

            - Jenny Stolka is heading up the golf tournament. 

            - VCC will not be sponsoring the tournament; however, all proceeds go to Valley Mentoring this year.

            -  KVIK is coming down for the afternoon.

            - the golf course will be doing the lunch.

 

D. In-kind defined

            - Dave clarified that people just attending the All VCC Meetings do not count as in-kind.  If they are there to volunteer and help such as: set up tables, help with food, present on a topic, or any additional acts of service, then they count as in-kind. 

 

E. Office Heat

            - Heat has been shut up because the thermometer wasn’t working correctly. 

            - When heat is turned on pipes on the Youth Center leak boiling water

            - It was decided the Steering Team would write a letter to the appropriate people. 

 

F. Tobacco Coalition Notes

            - Sharon handed out a packet of information that may be helpful to better understand grants.

                       

G. Town Hall Meeting handouts

            - Sharon made available to those in attendance a hard copy summary of the 2006 Iowa town hall meetings.    

 

H. Risky Business

             – 5 students are interested, estimated budget $850 DFC approved.

           

I. VCC Fund Development update/report

            1) Online Store/fundraiser – Allen Knox is looking into this site and if it can benefit the VCC.    

            2) Golf Tournament

            -  Holes can be sponsored for $1,000/hole.

            - mentor/mentees will be invited to play in the morning

            -  Date set for August 25th

            - money will filter through the VCC in a separate account.

                        *important to leave paper trail

                        *this did bring up additional tax questions

All VCC Meeting….

-Date set for June 6th, Clermont Park, Barney Burgers?? Barney still needs to be contacted.

-Focus will be on Mentoring
