Steering Team Meeting Minutes

In attendance: Stephanie Murphy, Sharon Rich, Cathy Molumby, Dave Runyon,
Linda Watson, Cassie Friederich, Malinda Riley, Michelle Rothlisberger, Alice Schaer
A. Financial Report: Elgin State Bank, Period Ending 10/13/2006 ~ $10, 436.63
- Liability insurance has increased, but is equaled out by Helping Services covering staff’s Workman’s Comp.
B. Reports from Sub-Groups
1) Youth
-Red Ribbon Week went great. SODA kids handed out ribbons and wrist bands.
- Sgt. Steve Parker used magic, ventriloquism and humor to grab student’s attention about the dangers of substance use and abuse.
- A car involved in a drinking-related accident was on display in the Valley parking lot.
- All Stars has started. The first night had 28 students!
- Wadena Betterment Committee donated $200 to help cover the cost of All Stars supplies/T-shirts.
- VCC Coupon Books – only 10 books have been turned in.
- Pancake Breakfast - Sunday, Nov. 12 from 8am – 1pm at Clermont Opera House. – Free Will Donation
- Snowball Dance in January.
*Planning Meeting: Monday, Nov. 20 6:45 PM - Adults needed!
- 5th and 6th/Jr. High/High School Youth Center still needs volunteers.
- Basket Fund-raiser – Silent Auction Wednesday January 31.
- SODA Scholarship –Need to re-write some of the wording. Arley Ellingson needs to be replaced on the committee. Sharon will be calling a potential replacement.
2) Parent
- Parent/Community Subgroup starting. We have a total of 3 individuals. First meeting November 20th at 4:00 PM at the Youth Center.

4) Mentoring
- Fayette County Mentoring Partnership. The different mentoring groups in Fayette County now work together and support each other, coordinated by Kathy Schwartzhoff of Helping Services.
- Valley Mentoring is the Did You Know topic for this month.
- 5 mentors needing youth to mentor.
C. Report on Planning Meeting for January
- Meeting scheduled for Wednesday November 29th at 5:00 PM in the Valley Media Center to prepare for the Planning Retreat January 13th.
- 12 sectors need to be contacted prior to January Planning Retreat.
D. AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer?
- The VCC may qualify to have an AmeriCorps volunteer come work for us. What additional costs are there?
E. Next All-VCC Meeting on January 31, 2007, speaker????
- Possible theme: Underage Substance Abuse- targeting athletes. Dave Runyon suggested talking to the Luther Wrestling Coach as a possible speaker. Other potential speakers Janet Zwick, local coach, Drake Cross Country Coach.
F. Media Promotion....... is it working???
- Malinda has gotten some positive feedback.
G. VCC Fund Development update/report
- They are sending out 10 letters a week.
Other Reports and information………………..
- Fayette County Community Foundation – Alice Schaer contacted Mayors in Elgin, Clermont, and Wadena a second time.
- Reapplication deadline is January 15th.
Needed: The VCC is in need of a digital camera or funds for a digital camera.
