Mission of the Fund Development Team

The mission of the VCC Fund Development Team is to encourage gifts, grants and volunteer support from public and private sources to be accepted and managed by the VCC Steering Team in a manner consistent with the vision of the Valley Community Coalition to support the needs of youth in the Valley community in regards to the problems of substance abuse.

The NEED for Grant Money

The NEED is greater than ever before and State and Federal Funds are being reduced!

We know the community will do everything it can to support the youth. It is our challenge to find various ways to “GET IT DONE!!”

That is why we are coming to you—to find out how you
can support this need.

TIME: You may join our many volunteers who
sponsor events at the Youth Center, pair up
with a youth in the VCC Mentoring Program,
help with a SODA activity, volunteer to help in
the VCC office, or join a sub-group for Youth,
Mentoring, Community or Parents.

FUNDING: There are many needs for direct
financial support. The VCC is now funding a
Mentoring Coordinator in addition to the two
staff members paid by grants and donations.
We also need financial sponsors for activities.

CONTACTS: We need volunteers to make contact with potential sources of grants and other
funding. This is an area of great potential!!

In November 2000, nearly 150 community members turned out for the first ALL-VCC Meeting, a show of support for youth that amazed the state officials at the event! Local business owners have continued to provide food for these informational meetings and attendance has ranged from 75 to over 200 people per quarterly meeting!

Members of the Valley community worked together to achieve SAFE certification for the Valley community – one of the first certifications of an area, not just a city. The Youth Center continues to be supported by donations and volunteers and provides a fun, safe place for youth. Mentoring, All-Stars, Supporting Players, Risky Business, Get a Grip, Soda activities and other VCC activities rely on volunteers and donations to continue to provide support for Valley youth.

The results have been recognized as one of the most successful coalitions of its’ kind in the state! But the Need is greater than ever before and state and federal funds are being reduced!! The Youth Need Your Help!!

Grants Explained

A critical part of the funding for the Valley Community Coalition is from GRANTS.  The income from these grants allows the VCC to provide staff, programs, activities, advertising and supplies.  Although the VCC does receive gifts and donations, the majority of the funding is from grants.

The VCC has been awarded grants from a number of different sources.  Major grants were received from the State of Iowa and from the Federal Government.  These grants allowed the VCC to establish the Youth Coordinator, Community Coordinator and Mentoring Coordinator positions as well as the many programs each of these Coordinators developed and coordinated.  MENTORING, ALL STARS, SODA and many other VCC programs have been funded at least in part by these major grants.  Both major grants supported the VCC for three years through the end of 2005.  One of the major grants has ended its' term and the other may be awarded for two more years, ending in 2007.

IN-KIND DONATIONS
Why it is critical to record your donation of
time, money, mileage, materials, food, etc

These grants required the VCC to show that the community was contributing a matching amount of donations.  These "IN-KIND DONATIONS" could be in the form of actual dollars, food, supplies, volunteer time and volunteer mileage.  For example, everyone who attends an ALL-VCC MEETING is asked to sign in and write down the mileage they drove to attend the event.  The total of the hours of attendance and the miles driven by all in attendance are credited as "IN-KIND DONATIONS" that can be used as a match for the grant requirements.  Mentors keep track of their hours and these are credited as "IN-KIND DONATIONS" for grant purposes.  When the Steering Team meets, those hours and miles are recorded for crediting as "IN-KIND DONATIONS" for grant purposes.  There are many other examples of these types of donations such as the time that it will take to prepare this article for the website.  The writer is keeping track of his hours and will turn them in to the VCC office to be recorded as an "IN-KIND DONATION."

It is extremely important that all donations, volunteer hours and mileage be turned in to the VCC office.  This is a demonstration of the community support for the VCC programs and is not only important for matching the grants already awarded but also for supporting requests for additional grants in the future.  Be certain that you keep track of your donations, hours and mileage so that you can give that information to the VCC office.  Click here to open a PDF file for the IN-KIND Donation Log.  As explained above, matching donations are  vital to meeting the requirements of our grant specifications.

The VCC has received other grants in addition to the federal and state grants already mentioned.  Some of these grants are awarded with no requirements as to reporting matching donations.  Other grants are awarded with no restrictions on the use of the money.  Still others are awarded for specific programs or activities.  The accounting for the grant usage is a major part of the Steering Team function and is recorded carefully to fulfill the grant requirements.|
